The Lowell Inn, named for famed Stillwater entrepreneur Elmore Lowell, was built in 1927 on the grounds of the old lumberjack boarding house, The Sawyer House. Over the years, formal dining rooms were added, including the Garden Room featuring a spring-fed water fountain, originally stocked with trout. The
Matterhorn Room, now used for fondue dinners, was carved by
a renown carpenter from Switzerland who lived in the hotel for several years as he designed and hand-carved the room.
The Inn has 23 guest rooms, decorated in Williamsburg and French Provincial styles and a newly annexed addition completed in 2011 featuring 12 European Modern styled guest rooms. The new addition includes the Lowell Inn Event Center designed for Weddings, Meetings and Events; the attached parking ramp; and the improved outdoor garden patio area.
The Inn was run for many years by Arthur and Nelle Palmer, former Vaudevillians, who lived in the Inn while raising their family. Nelle
was well known for her style and as the hostess, greeting diners and travelers in the Lowell Inn’s glamorous lobby. A portrait of Nelle hangs in the George Washington room.
The Lowell Inn is a testament to the hospitality of the Palmer family that operated the Inn for three generations. In 2001, the St. Croix Boat and Packet Company purchased the Lowell Inn. It is our goal to continue and maintain the Palmer family’s tradition of personal attention to our guests and patrons.
